When Two Become One: How to Properly Pluralize a Last Name

changing your name? learn how to add that tricky “s”

As you plan your perfect wedding day, every detail counts. I often get requests for plural last names on signage and paper goods, and I know just how tricky it can be to get them right. Don’t worry though, I’ve got you covered with a few simple tips to ensure your envelopes, seating charts, and signage are spot on.

keep it simple:

The general rule for pluralizing a last name is to add an “s” at the end.

  • If your last name is Smith, it becomes Smiths.

  • If your last name is Brown, it becomes Browns.

watch out for tricky endings:

If your last name ends in s, x, z, ch, or sh, add “es” instead.

  • If your last name is Willis, it becomes Willises.

  • If your last name is Bush, it becomes Bushes.

  • If your last name is Rodriguez, it becomes Rodriguezes.

less is more:

Avoid adding apostrophes when pluralizing last names. Apostrophes indicate possession, not plurality.

  • Correct: The Williamses

  • Incorrect: The Williams’s

a few examples:

To make your life a little easier, here are a few examples:

  • The McCrarys invite you to celebrate their wedding day.

  • Welcome to the reception of the Martinezes.

  • Find your seat at the table with the O’Connors.

a step further:

Want to really impress? Here’s how to make a plural last name possessive.

  • Follow the rules above to pluralize the last name.

  • Take that pluralized form and add an apostrophe to the end.

  • Correct: The Martinezes’ wedding reception
